Conical compression springs
Conical compression springs are also known as cone springs. The advantage of conical springs is that they are more stable, this advantage is especially applicable for thin wires. This phenomenon often occurs when a compression spring is four times longer than the outer diameter (ratio 4 to 1). This causes the compression spring to become warped when it is below a certain compressed length.
Due to the conical shape, the wire is pressed inside the other winding instead of on top of it. This creates a telescopic effect when warping occurs. This has another advantage. In contrast to the standard compression spring, the collapse of the windings reduces the entire height. At full compression, a conical compression spring is as high as the width of the last winding. This does not always have to be the case; in order to ensure stability, it is also possible to allow the windings fall on top of one another on the inside.
Forces of conical compression springs
Conical compression springs are not linear springs. This means that conical compression springs do not provide a constant force. The reason that conical springs do not deliver linear forces is because of the variation in the outer diameter. The smaller outer diameters provide more force than the larger outer diameters. Because every outer diameter of conical compression springs is different from the next, the force is not linear.
The way in which conical compression springs are made also influences the force. Conical compression springs are made by determining the outer diameters of the first winding and the last winding. Diameters do not have to be determined between the first and last windings. This can cause variation in the windings. This variation in windings in turn ensures that the same force is not released per winding when compression is applied.
